Means: SPASH football receives pleasant surprise PDF Print E-mail

How does a team win a game against a program it didn't bother to schedule this season?

You still may not be sure after reading this column, but such was the case for the Stevens Point Area Senior High football team, which in a mysterious turn of events was told it actually won 2-0 over the Rhinelander this past Friday, instead of losing 10-0 to Minnetonka, Minn., like this reporter and several hundred others at Community Stadium at Goerke Park thought they saw.

On Tuesday --not before the season began, or even before Week 8, when the information would have been a bit more useful -- SPASH athletic director Stephanie Hauser found out from the WIAA that the school had received a forfeit win over former Wisconsin Valley Conference foe Rhinelander, a program that had dropped out of the conference in football during the offseason. The win awarded to SPASH took the place of any result from the fourth nonconference game (Minnetonka) that SPASH needed to play a full nine-game schedule.

Prep football: SPASH may use defeat as motivation in playoffs PDF Print E-mail

Its game against Minnetonka (Minn.) on Friday was nothing less than an playoff preview for the Stevens Point Area Senior High football team, so falling 10-0 to the Skippers couldn't have hurt more if it came from a team that calls Wisconsin home.

SPASH, having won seven games by an average of more than 27 points leading up to Minnetonka, was in search of a late-season test and the Panthers got just that. The offense in particular hadn't let any opposing defense get under its skin like the Skippers did, giving up five turnovers, all fumbles.

"(On Friday) we weren't on top of our game," said running back Austin Sikorski, who rushed for 57 yards against Minnetonka. "I didn't do what I was supposed to do, the whole offense didn't do what it was supposed to do."

The feeling of not wanting to be disappointed again may propel SPASH to higher heights in the postseason. What could help motivate the Panthers is that it was largely uncharacteristic plays, like the fumbles, that did them in.

On top of that, SPASH didn't play down to its opponent, one of the best programs in Minnesota. In particular, the Panthers defense played one of its best games and gave up under 200 yards from scrimmage.

"Our defense played tough, they played the way we needed them to play," SPASH coach Pete McAdams said.

"They were put into some tough spots at times, but the bottom line is we didn't make the plays we needed to make."

The Minnetonka (Minn.) Skippers made sure their trip from across the state border was worth the time and effort.

In a revealing game for both sides, the Minnesota power was able to contain Stevens Point Area Senior High like few teams have been able to in recent years, winning 10-0 Friday at Community Stadium at Goerke Park.

The Panthers took the loss hard and that was without knowing that this was their first shutout loss since 2004 and the team's lowest offensive output since a three-point game in 2006.

"(SPASH) is a really good football team, fun to play," Minnetonka coach Dave Nelson said. "It's huge for us, it's been a while since we beat a really good team like this."

Minnetonka, winners of four in a row, took advantage of six SPASH fumbles, including four lost. Outside of a couple of lengthy drives, SPASH struggled to keep the ball and make big plays. There also was precious little time spent in Minnetonka's red zone. SPASH's best chance at scoring came on a 38-yard field goal attempt from Isaac Groshek in the second quarter -- the ball bounced off the cross bar.

Prep football: Sikorski sidelined with turf toe PDF Print E-mail

The familiar sight of Austin Sikorski hitting holes provided by the Stevens Point Area Senior High offensive line will be missing from what should be a showcase nonconference game for the undefeated SPASH football team tonight.

Panthers coach Pete McAdams said Thursday that his star senior running back, who has 1,047 yards through the first seven games, will sit out against Minnetonka (Minn.).

Minnetonka is 4-2 and a top-15 team in Minnesota, and visits Community Stadium at Goerke Park at 7 p.m. tonight.

McAdams said that Sikorski is suffering from turf toe.

Making the decision to sit him easier was that this is a nonconference game.

Sikorski may have seen spot action if this was another Wisconsin Valley Conference game, such as he did against D.C. Everest last week, rushing for 46 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries in a 34-3 win.

Prep football: SPASH takes command of WVC with win over Evergreens PDF Print E-mail

WESTON -- The first half of the D.C. Everest-Stevens Point Area Senior High football game Friday night looked like another classic battle between two of the top programs in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

The second half beared no resemblance to the first as the Panthers, ranked No. 2 among large schools in The Associated Press poll, erupted for 21 points in the third quarter en route to a convincing 34-3 victory over the Evergreens at Stiehm Stadium.

The victory ensured unbeaten SPASH of at least a share of the Valley crown at 4-0 and 7-0 overall. The Evergreens fell to 1-3 in league play and 2-5 overall.

"It's an exciting situation to be in right now, no doubt about it," said SPASH coach Pete McAdams, whose team can clinch the title outright with a victory over last-place Wausau East next Friday. "The players have set some lofty goals with this being one of them. It's definitely a positive vibe being in this position for a conference championship."

The teams went scoreless in the first quarter before SPASH grabbed a 7-3 halftime edge.

"We got off to a slow start and they did some really good things offensively," McAdams said. "It's not that we were sputtering, they just came out with their running game and moved the ball on us. Give credit to Everest, they came out ready to play and we did not."

The second half was different as the Panthers scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, including two by Austin Sikorski, who was used sparingly in the game.

"He got a little dinged up last week, so we didn't want to give him a whole lot of playing time this week," McAdams said. "But Joey Mathe, our other tailback did some nice things."

The Panthers started all but one drive in Everest territory and never allowed the Evergreens to get a first down in the second half.

"Defensively, they were doing some different things we hadn't seen in the first half to stop our running game," McAdams said. "At halftime, we made a few adjustments, but defensively it wasn't adjustments. We just started playing a little better and a little smarter."
