SPASH dedicates new fitness center PDF Print E-mail

Stevens Point Area Senior High's new 6,000-square-foot strength and fitness center is officially open.

School district and Ministry Medical Group representatives, students, athletes and community supporters dedicated the new facility Thursday. It is equipped with more aerobic and cardio equipment than the old weight room could accommodate. Four flat-screen televisions hang from the ceiling.

The addition is attached to the southwest corner of the SPASH fieldhouse, adjacent to the old weight room, which will be turned into a multipurpose room.

It meets all Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and can hold more than 100 people, making it large enough for several classes at once.

Ministry Medical Group donated $500,000 to build the center, and additional money was raised to outfit the center. Jim Ford of Ford Chiropractic Clinic in Stevens Point led the fundraising work.

Construction was proposed in May 2007 and began in October 2008.

"Ministry Medical Group, thanks for making our dreams a reality," SPASH Principal Mike Devine said. "It sure is an exciting time to be a SPASH Panther."

SPASH football player John Banovetz said this "huge upgrade" will be a welcome change.

Prep football: SPASH wearing bull's-eye in game against upset-minded Wausau West PDF Print E-mail

While other Wisconsin Valley Conference football teams have been knocking each other off in the early part of the season, Stevens Point Area Senior High has hardly broken a sweat.

That quick start has the Panthers, 2-0 in the WVC and 5-0 overall, a prohibitive favorite to win their fourth Valley title in five years.

The Panthers, though, are on the constant lookout for an opponent with an upset on its mind -- beginning this week when Wausau West comes to town at 7 p.m. Friday in the Stevens Point Journal Game of the Week.

"We can't (rest on our laurels)," SPASH coach Pete McAdams said. "West has a lot of weapons and they can play some really good football. There's nothing that would make them happier than to come down here and take out SPASH."

Prep football: Panthers use second-half surge to beat Red Robins PDF Print E-mail

STEVENS POINT -- Dan Desorcy isn't one to come up with some sort of special Knute Rockne speech or get in the face of his teammates.

Instead, the Stevens Point Area Senior High senior wide receiver/kick returner would rather let his actions fire up the football team.

Desorcy lit a fire under the Panthers by returning the second-half kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, and second-ranked SPASH was off and running to a 46-14 nonconference win over Antigo at Community Stadium at Goerke Park on Saturday night.

"I don't get the ball very often, so when I do I like to bring some energy to the team. It's like a chain reaction," said Desorcy, who added a 16-yard touchdown reception on the first play of the fourth quarter. "I had like three holes to choose from (on the kickoff return)."

SPASH coach Pete McAdams acknowledged there was a noticeable lack of enthusiasm and energy heading into halftime with a 17-7 lead.

Prep football: SPASH looking for revenge against Antigo this weekend PDF Print E-mail

Stevens Point Area Senior High football is riding as high as ever, with its 4-0 record and top-three state rankings in both The Associated Press Large School Poll and wissports.net Coaches Poll.

In entering this Saturday's game against Antigo, though, feelings of revenge may supercede feelings of confidence that could come from the Panthers' hot start.

Last year's 29-28 loss to the Red Birds in Antigo, which interestingly enough also came in Week 5 after a 4-0 start, started a rough three-week stretch for SPASH that saw two losses. The Antigo loss and a later loss to D.C. Everest caused some for a time to discredit SPASH as a statewide contender, but the Panthers shook that off by winning five straight games leading up to its Level 4 playoff loss.

All four of SPASH's captains mentioned the Antigo game as an important game prior to this season. The chances of a letdown this week after last week's big win at Marshfield should be very small.

Groshek, SPASH gets their kicks against Marshfield PDF Print E-mail

MARSHFIELD -- Stevens Point Area Senior High's Isaac Groshek is use to inflicting all sorts of damage with his legs on a soccer field.

On Friday night, the senior placekicker supplied the Panthers with a secret weapon in a showdown with Marshfield.

Groshek connected on three field goals, including as third-ranked SPASH knocked off the eighth-ranked Tigers 30-13 in Wisconsin Valley Conference action at Beell Stadium.

"I pretty much just said a prayer before every kick," said Groshek, who is the leading scorer on the SPASH soccer team. "The snapper and holder set it up perfect, so it was easy for me. Without them I look stupid out there."

He made sure the Panthers put points on the scoreboard when in scoring position with field goals of 34, 45 and 42 yards.

Even more important, Groshek also demoralized Marshfield by booming every kickoff into the the end zone to force a touchback.

Instead of working with a short field, the Tigers were forced to march 80 yards just about every possession, and with minimal success.

"I guess I understand how important that is, and it's something I strive for," Groshek said of touchbacks. "Before the game I found a rhythm on my stride."
