Prep football: SPASH, Marshfield battle for early control of Wisconsin Valley Conference PDF Print E-mail

Over the past few years, observers of Wisconsin Valley Conference football have gotten used to only one season-changing game in the conference season -- D.C. Everest vs. Stevens Point Area Senior High.

That game doesn't look to lose its luster this year, but it suddenly has competition in this week's game between SPASH and Marshfield, the Stevens Point Journal Game of the Week.

"As far as we're concerned, this is a conference championship game," said Marshfield coach Len Luedtke.

The Tigers and the Panthers are both 3-0 heading into Friday's game at Marshfield's Beell Stadium, and as twin qualifiers to Level 4 of last season's playoffs (SPASH in Division 1, Marshfield in Division 2), both teams stand as solid representatives of the quality of play in the Valley in central Wisconsin and elsewhere.

WIAA realignment proposal raises long-distance concerns PDF Print E-mail

Stevens Point Area Public School officials are optimistic about a proposed statewide varsity football realignment but concerned with travel time and costs.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, the state's high school sports governing body, is proposing to group schools in districts based on enrollment and geography rather than in conferences that often require smaller, less competitive schools to compete with larger ones.

This plan, proposed in July, places Stevens Point with the following schools: Chippewa Falls, D.C. Everest, Eau Claire Memorial, Eau Claire North, Hudson, Superior and Wausau West.

Athletic Director Stephanie Hauser said she and other coaches are concerned with increased travel time under this proposal. Both the team and the fans would have to travel farther, and she said that might affect the number of people showing up for away games.

Prep football: SPASH captures Ol' River Jug with convincing win over Raiders PDF Print E-mail

With the Ol' River Jug on the line, both Stevens Point Area Senior High and Wisconsin Rapids football teams opened up their playbooks and let it fly in an entertaining installment of one of central Wisconsin's most storied rivalries.

Behind four touchdown passes from Alex Plaster and a host of other contributors, SPASH overcame Rapids 44-20 at Community Stadium at Goerke Park. SPASH at times left the crowd stunned with how it managed to maneuver through the Raiders defense.

"We passed a lot more, a lot of things opened up on their 4-4 (defense)," Plaster said.

The first play from scrimmage was a quick screen pass from Plaster to Dan Desorcy, the co-offensive star of the night. Desorcy went 65 yards to the end zone to put SPASH up 7-0. He wound up with 142 yards and two touchdowns on four catches.

Prep football: SPASH shuts out Hortonville in home opener PDF Print E-mail

Normally a freeze-out would provide no negative effect to a polar bear but in getting froze out of the end zone the Hortonville Polar Bears found themselves out of their element against Stevens Point Area Senior High.

SPASH was well at home in its first game of the season at Community Stadium at Goerke Park, winning 37-0 in its first ever matchup against Division 2 Hortonville. Austin Sikorski ran wild again, following up his 221 yards and five touchdowns in Week 1 with 223 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries against Hortonville.

"Our team got closer, we got some of the second team in and they had some fun," Sikorski said.

Prep football: SPASH set for home opener PDF Print E-mail

Even though Stevens Point Area Senior High will be in the comforts of Community Stadium at Goerke Park on Friday, its second game of the season may be a lot like its first, which was a long way from home.  Hortonville, like Superior last week, is an unfamiliar opponent, meaning the Panthers may have to adjust mid-game. Panthers coach Pete McAdams, whose team won 35-14 in Week 1, likens the challenge to playoff time when unfamiliar team after another comes calling.

Playing the first home game in front of what should be a big crowd welcoming the University of Wisconsin's Bucky Badger should be an advantage for SPASH.  "Our players will be motivated to come out and do the best that they can," McAdams said.
