Arrowhead too much for Stevens Point PDF Print E-mail

OSHKOSH -- The Stevens Point Area Senior High football team was up against more than a great team Saturday. Stevens Point Area Senior High’s Matt Deates tackles Hartland Arrowhead quarterback Tom Parish during Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 state semifinal at Titan Stadium’s J.J. Keller Field in Oshkosh. (DOUG WOJCIK/Central Wisconsin Sunday)It was up against history.

And while the Panthers' appearance in their third consecutive Level 4 game is local history, opponent Hartland Arrowhead was trying to make state history -- a third straight trip to the WIAA Division 1 state championship game and the ninth trip overall for the Wisconsin powerhouse.

The grander historic bid won in the end, allowing Arrowhead to overcome SPASH 49-21 and send the Warhawks on to play Mequon Homestead on Friday in Madison.

Meanwhile, SPASH had to pick itself up off the turf at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium after hitting the wall once again in the state semifinals.

SPASH one step away from title game PDF Print E-mail

It's become obvious that the Stevens Point Area Senior High football team is committed to do whatever it takes to win.

The Panthers continued to run plays and go through conditioning drills for more than two hours Tuesday evening, even as snow began to accumulate on the turf of Community Field at Goerke Park.

They would be thrilled to do the same thing next week in preparation for the WIAA Division 1 state championship game.

But before that can happen, SPASH will have to prevail in the state semifinal game against the top Division 1 team in the state, Hartland Arrowhead, on Saturday in Level 4 play. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Titan Stadium on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus.

Beating Arrowhead will be easier said than done, as the Warhawks have put together a 12-0 record this year after winning the 2007 state championship. In fact, the Warhawks have not lost since November 2006, compiling a winning streak of 26 games.

While it was never expected to have a full rebuilding season, few expected Stevens Point Area Senior High football to have a Level 4 season in 2008.

But the number of true believers proved to mean less than who actually believed -- the SPASH team itself.

"They've set some high goals, but early on those goals were set because this is what SPASH football always does. I don't know if they truly believed in them," SPASH coach Pete McAdams said. "But as the season went along, they started to gain some confidence and realize what they are capable of doing."

After a 31-24 win over Appleton North, SPASH is preparing to play in Level 4 against Hartland Arrowhead. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. Saturday at Titan Stadium on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus. This is the third consecutive year that SPASH remains as one of only four Division 1 teams left in the state of Wisconsin.

Miscues take the energy out of Lightning's playoff run PDF Print E-mail

STEVENS POINT — A solemn Steve Lichtfuss had just embraced his head coach when the Appleton North tailback turned away and briefly examined all that was wrong around him.

Postgame position huddles, normally cheerful and boisterous, were instead filled with final words and tears.

And a brisk northerly wind, coupled with a light falling snow, added even more chill to an already bleak atmosphere as advertised by the lights of the Goerke Field scoreboard.

Stevens Point 31, Appleton North 24.

"It's real tough," Lichtfuss said quietly as he and his Lightning teammates tried to absorb the unwanted end of a season following Saturday's stinging WIAA Division 1, Level 3 playoff loss to the host Panthers.

(THOMAS KUJAWSKI/Central Wisconsin Sunday)team, which will return to the WIAA Division 1 state semifinals after beating Appleton North 31-24 on Saturday at Community Field at Goerke Park.

The SPASH crowd erupted in celebration as the final seconds ticked off. The game had became academic after the second of two fumbles by Lightning star running back Steve Lichtfuss put the ball in SPASH's hands to run out the final two minutes of the game.

Some nice breaks, a versatile offensive attack and some determination allowed the Panthers to clinch a third consecutive trip to the state semifinal round. Defending state champion Hartland Arrowhead awaits SPASH. The game will be played Friday or Saturday at a time and site to be announced either today or Monday.
