WIAA Division 1, Level 3 playoffs: Stevens Point 31, Appleton North 24 PDF Print E-mail

Rough start

Appleton North (9-3) dug itself an early hole by falling behind by two touchdowns in Saturday's 31-24 loss to Stevens Point in a WIAA Division 1, Level 3 playoff game at Goerke Field.

Stevens Point (10-2) scored on its first possession on a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Winker to tight end Nick Peplinski. A fumble by tailback Steve Lichtfuss on North's first drive provided another scoring opportunity as Winker tossed a dump-off pass to fullback Jake Tatro for a 17-yard score.

The early passing may have taken the Lightning by surprise, but it wasn't anything the team hadn't seen on film, according to senior defensive end Clay Gosse.

"I think we practiced for that," Gosse said. "I just don't think we came out like we usually do. I don't think that was Appleton North football."

WIAA football playoffs: 'Emotional' SPASH faces next challenge PDF Print E-mail

Stevens Point Area Senior High football is coming off its most emotional game of the season, which produced the team's most inspired effort.

Beating rival D.C. Everest for the third straight time in the postseason was no small feat, but overcoming Appleton North (9-2) in Level 3 play would not be compact in size either.

Coach Pete McAdams expects his team to be fully involved emotionally in Saturday's game, which kicks off at 4 p.m. at Community Stadium.

"At this point of the year, if you have an emotional let down, you go home," McAdams said. "The team knows that they have to play at a high level."

McAdams says both teams are playing their best football of the season.

APPLETON — You might find "Split Right Jet, Dash Right Z Come Back X Over" in a typical West Coast offensive playbook.

A quarterback might call something like "Jag Left Motion 58 Monster Blast" if he's operating out of the spread.

So, in this age of sleek and snazzy 21st century football, what do the boys over at Appleton North like to go with when the pigskin is in their hands?

"When they know what's coming but we still shove it down their throat, that's the greatest feeling in the world," senior fullback Nick Geske said with a smirk. "We love that."

WESTON — Football victories usually come down to which team controls the line of scrimmage.Stevens Point's Austin Sikorski carries D.C. Everest's Ethan Stennett on his back Saturday during a WIAA Division 1 Level 2 game at Steihm Stadium in Weston. (Butch McCartney/For Central Wisconsin Sunday)

Stevens Point Area Senior High controlled the line — on both sides of the ball — and D.C. Everest couldn’t control running back Austin Sikorski, resulting in a 35-17 Panthers victory over the previously unbeaten Evergreens in a WIAA Division 1 Level 2 playoff game Saturday afternoon at Stiehm Stadium.

The win moves SPASH, 9-2, into a Level 3 matchup against Appleton North, a 23-7 winner over Bayport. Everest finished its season at 9-1.

“I couldn’t be any happier right now about how things went,” SPASH coach Pete McAdams said. “That’s a good football team we played. They were undefeated for a reason.”
