A second round WIAA Division 1 playoff game against D.C. Everest has become a virtual rite of fall for the Stevens Point Area Senior High football team.

For the third straight season, the Panthers (8-2) and D.C. Everest (9-0) will meet in a Level 2. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Stiehm Stadium on Saturday.

"There is no doubt we know quite a bit about each other," said SPASH coach Pete McAdams, whose team has prevailed in the rivalry at playoff time each of the last two years.

"Two very good teams are going up against one another. I'm sure both teams will not have any problem being motivated and playing hard. Both teams will play with a high level of emotion."

D.C. Everest is coming off a 24-21 victory over Superior in the opening round on Tuesday, forcing eight turnovers.

Hudson quarterback Chase Graskewicz came out running the option in a WIAA Division 1 opening round playoff Stevens Point Area Senior High running back Austin Sikorski looks for yardage during Tuesday’s WIAA Division 1 playoff game against Hudson at Community Stadium at Goerke Park. (DOUG WOJCIK/STEVENS POINT JOURNAL)game Tuesday night.

Stevens Point Area Senior High cornerback Isaac Elliott was having none of that, flattening a pair of Raiders running backs on the pitch early in the proceedings.

Elliott and the rest of his cohorts on the SPASH defense wasted no time drawing a line in the artificial turf, and Hudson was left with no options the rest of the night.

WIAA football playoffs: D.C. Everest escapes Sperior PDF Print E-mail

WESTON -- Overconfidence should not be a problem for the D.C. Everest football team heading into Saturday's WIAA Division 1 Level 2 rematch with Stevens Point.

The Evergreens were the fortunate recipients of eight Superior turnovers and needed pretty much every one to escape with a 24-21 Level 1 playoff victory over the Spartans on Tuesday night at Stiehm Stadium.

The win moves No. 2-seeded and unbeaten Everest, 9-0, into a Level 2 game against SPASH, 8-2, at a site and time to be determined today. The Panthers defeated Hudson, 35-8, in its Level 1 game Tuesday afternoon.

SPASH breaks ground for strength and fitness center PDF Print E-mail

On Tuesday, local school and health officials broke ground for a new fitness center at Stevens Point Area High School.

The groundbreaking ceremony came after the Stevens Point Area School Board's unanimous approval Monday of the fitness center's construction.

Board members also accepted the $500,00 donation from Ministry Medical Group for the Strength and Fitness Center, and gave the center's naming rights to Ministry for 20 years.

"The vision is to be able to get more students in physical education classes (and) access to strength and fitness equipment," Principal Mike Devine said.

Five area schools ready for Level 1 matchups PDF Print E-mail

The final week of the regular season in high school football was almost a playoff week in and of itself, but there's nothing like the real thing.

Stevens Point Pacelli may have had its most challenging game of the season against Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Stevens Point Area Senior High approached its Wausau East game like a playoff and performed admirably. Rosholt secured a playoff spot by winning. Amherst and Almond-Bancroft earned wins and continued momentum.

As these teams enter WIAA Level 1 play, there is a renewed sense in each squad that destiny is back in their hands and that winning this first game will only be a matter of showing the right effort.

SPASH (7-2) opens up Level 1 in the first of two games Tuesday afternoon at Community Stadium at Goerke Park against Hudson. In Hudson, the Panthers have an opponent that they know very well. Respect is there also, enough for both teams to scrimmage each other in the preseason for the past four years.
