Heat not a factor as prep football kicks off PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mark Massoglia, Stevens Point Journal

Unseasonably mild temperatures for early August has made for great conditions for area football teams.

Typically hot and humid for two-a-days, the temps have been in the mid-70s and low-80s. Tuesday, the first day teams could practice, the high was a September-like 74 degrees.

"No one really thought about the weather all week because it has been so great," said Pittsville coach Dan Hahn, whose team practices in the evening to try to avoid the midday heat. "We got a lot done and the kids worked really hard. Because it wasn't so hot, I think we were able to do a better job conditioning during the first week."

Workers lay turf at Goerke PDF Print E-mail

Workers began laying new turf at Goerke Field this week -- the first step of renovations that include a new scoreboard, locker rooms and updated restrooms.

Thomas Kujawski/Stevens Point Journal

The process began late Sunday and is expected to continue about three weeks, said Parks Director Tom Schrader. The 78,000 square feet of artificial turf is made by Mondo, he added.

Schrader said installing the turf will cost about $1.1 million, and the city will contribute $600,000. About $900,000 is from the private sector.

The project is both on budget and on schedule, said Rick Rettler, president of the Rettler Corp., the engineering and construction manager of the project. He anticipates the project's completion in 2010.
